I began my career in newspaper photography in 1973 with my first ever publication in the Barrhead Pictorial. The picture was of a fire in Gladstone Avenue for which I received the handsome cheque of 'One Pound'!
Undeterred by this meagre payment I submitted a picture to the Barrhead News and met the editor Alice Craig who encouraged me to become a full time freelance for the newspaper.
I went on to contribute to other publications including the South Side News, the Mercury, Renfrewshire Gazette, Govan
Press, Flourish and the Gryffe Weekly News.
I was subsequently offered daily assignments with The Scotsman and the newly launched Scotland on Sunday before accepting a staff position with the group in Glasgow in 1989. |
